THE DISNEY CHANNEL WILL PRESENT THE 'SUNDAY NIGHT SHOWCASE
SIX-WEEK BEATLES FESTIVAL' FROM SEPT. 27 THROUGH NOV. 1
The Festival, Which Features Six Beatles Shows,
Pays Tribute to Rock Music's Legendary Foursome
BURBANK, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The "Sunday Night Showcase Six-week Beatles Festival," a six-week tribute to the four musical talents who became one of the most successful and influential bands in rock history, will premiere Sept. 27 through Nov. 1 on The Disney Channel, announced Bruce Rider, senior vice president of programming.
The festival kicks off with the U.S. premiere of "The Making of Sgt. Pepper" on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), and continues with the following shows airing at 9 p.m. each Sunday night: "Magical Mystery Tour" on Oct. 4, "Paul McCartney: Going Home" on Oct. 11, "A Tribute to John Lennon" on Oct. 18, and "John & Yoko's Imagine" on Oct. 25. The festival concludes with the world television premiere of "Paul McCartney: Get Back" on Nov. 1.
The U.S. premiere of "The Making of Sgt. Pepper," a revealing look at the creativity behind one of the most unique and insightful rock albums in music history, airs during the 25th anniversary of the release of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Candid personal reflections from George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as George Martin, the band's longtime producer, shed light on the myths and mysteries surrounding the album. Martin presents, for the first time, the actual tapes and outtakes used to create the music. Additional interviews feature Brian Wilson, Phil Collins and the album's cover designer, Peter Blake.
In "Magical Mystery Tour," the Beatles and a group of compatriots travel throughout the English countryside by bus, and take a "magical tour" while singing a collection of songs. In addition to the title song, they sing "Fool on the Hill," "All My Loving," "I Am the Walrus," "Please Don't Be Long," "Your Mother Should Know" and "I Say Hello."
"Paul McCartney: Going Home," which won the 1991 Cable Ace Award for Outstanding Music Special, takes a candid look at one of history's most successful recording artists. The show follows the rock star on concert dates around the world and features exclusive concert footage, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, from his 1990 world tour, capturing performances of some of his, and the Beatles', greatest hits. McCartney talks openly about the tour, his life and his years with the Beatles. The special closes at a final Liverpool, England, with a moving three-song tribute to his late friend, John Lennon.
"A Tribute to John Lennon" is a musical celebration of the life and work of the infinitely talented songwriter and recording artist. From "Help" to "Imagine," the show features some of today's most celebrated musicians performing Lennon's songs from the Lennon- McCartney partnership and from his solo career. Highlights include Natalie Cole performing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and Randy Travis performing "Nowhere Man." McCartney, Starr, Elton John, Michael Jackson and Billy Joel are among the cast of talented musicians who pay tribute to Lennon.
"John & Yoko's Imagine," the personal and creative 1971 film celebrating the life and music of Lennon and Yoko Ono, draws from songs from Lennon's acclaimed "Imagine" album. Ballads, socio- political anthems and startling images are incorporated with words and music to evoke an emotional response. The film conveys an honesty and insight rarely exhibited by an artist of Lennon's stature.
The world television premiere of "Paul McCartney: Get Back" captures the infectious enthusiasm generated by McCartney while performing during his 1990 world tour -- his first concert tour in 13 years. McCartney sings many of the Beatles' classic songs, including some later hits that were never performed by the Beatles, such as the "Abbey Road" medley. Concert footage is intercut with historical newsreel and archive footage of some of the most extraordinary events of the past. The show takes a nostalgic look at the music, images and events that have shaped the last quarter century.
