THE DEAD CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION; Bodies of Czar's lost heirs are identified.

Byline: BY WILL STEWART

A NINETY-year mystery about the fate of the last Russian Czar's children has been solved - after their murdered remains were finally identified.

Genetic tests show two acid-burned bodies found by a disused road outside Ekaterinberg are Princess Maria and Crown Prince Alexei Romanov. Rusting bullets were found nearby.

For decades it was rumoured Alexei, 13, and one of his sisters, either Anastasia, 17, or Maria, 19, escaped when the rest of the Royal family were executed by Bolsheviks in 1918.

The bones of Czar Nicholas II, wife Alexandra, daughters, Olga, 22, Tatyana, 21, and one other princess, were discovered in 1991.

There was no sign of Alexei or the fourth princess. But Vladimir Solovyov, head of a group investigating the murders, has now said tests suggest the bodies, found last year, are likely to be the Czar's heir Alexei and Maria.
