 THE DAILY NEWS ANNOUNCES LAYOFFS
 NEW YORK, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- A management reorganization and


job reduction of 45 non-union positions was announced today by The Daily News.
 Included in the reorganization were:
 -- The Human Resources and Labor Relations Departments were combined into one department under senior vice president Jay Swardenski.
 The human resources functions will be supervised by Ann Podd, who will retain the title of associate editor. Swardenski is the paper's general counsel and director of labor relations.
 The consolidation will result in the reduction of 10 positions.
 -- The Production and Engineering Department were combined into one department under the direction of newly-appointed vice president/production Robert Harrison.
 Harrison was previously director of prepress operations. Keith Pierce, formerly vice president/engineering, becomes production manager, reporting to Harrison.
 A total of 17 positions were eliminated in the consolidation of the two departments.
 -- Eighteen additional positions were eliminated in the finance, editorial and circulation departments.
 "Today's actions, while painful, are necessary to keep The News running lean in these tough times," said Publisher Jim Willse. "They are part of a continuing effort to reduce costs in every way possible, while further strengthening the company."
