THE COCA-COLA COMPANY ANNOUNCES DECEMBER UNIT VOLUME SURPASSES ESTIMATES

DECEMBER INTERNATIONAL UNIT CASE VOLUME CLIMBS 11 PERCENT
ATLANTA, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) announced today that unit volume trends in the month of December had accelerated beyond previous estimates. December unit case volume internationally grew 11 percent over the prior year, significantly outpacing the Company's previously reported estimate of 5 percent growth. The Company stated the volume pick-up was fueled by very successful holiday marketing activities, including a global packaging promotion featuring specialized holiday packages. Comparable unit case volume in the United States advanced 6 percent in December, combining with international volume to produce worldwide unit case volume growth of 9 percent.
"We are especially pleased with our accelerated unit case volume growth in December," said Roberto C. Goizueta, chairman, Board of Directors and chief executive officer. "These results are the springboard from which we are launching 1993 with strong momentum," Mr. Goizueta continued. "In addition, our earnings trends remain solidly on track. Excluding the impact of adopting new accounting standards, we expect to report 20 percent growth in full year earnings per share when we announce our complete financial results on January 28."
December volume acceleration was reported in each major international region, led by the Northeast Europe and Africa Group's 25 percent increase and the European Community Group's 15 percent gain. Latin America unit case volume increased 8 percent in December; unit case volume in Brazil declined less than previously expected and the remainder of the region reported robust growth. In the Pacific Group, broad-based volume resurgence led to a unit case volume gain of 6 percent in December.
The rapid unit case volume growth in December boosted performance for the quarter, resulting in international unit case volume growth of 5 percent, United States unit case volume growth of 4 percent and a worldwide gain of 4 percent. For the full year, unit case volume advanced 4 percent internationally, 2 percent in the United States and 3 percent worldwide.
