THE COCA-COLA COMPANY AND FIFA ANNOUNCE FIRST-EVER WORLD FOOTBALL RANKING SYSTEM

ATLANTA, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) today announced the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, a computerized ranking system which will provide a monthly status classification of all senior national teams throughout the world.
It is the first time such a ranking has been made independent of the World Cup ranking.
The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be based on the results of World Cup final matches; World Cup qualifying matches; continental championship finals matches; continental championship qualifying matches; and friendly matches. At the end of each year, FIFA will designate a "Team of the Year" from among the 178 national teams, based on the progress achieved up the ranking table from January to December.
"The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking is the result of four years of intense research, taking carefully weighted criteria into consideration," said Dr. Joao Havelange, president of FIFA. "We believe football enthusiasts around the world will find the ranking a most interesting way to gauge the progress of the senior teams."
The criteria used in determining the ranking include points awarded or deducted for winning, drawing or losing; points for goals scored or conceded; bonus points for playing away matches; multiplying factors of various competitions; and regional strengths and weaknesses. The computer program used to assess the ranking was developed exclusively for FIFA by researchers in Zurich, in collaboration with the FIFA Media and Public Relations Department and Technical Department.
"Sponsorship of the World Ranking is part of The Coca-Cola Company's commitment to work with FIFA on innovative programs that generate additional interest in every international match played," said Gary P. Hite, vice president, International Sports, The Coca-Cola Company. "We have been involved with FIFA in a number of events and activities, in addition to the World Cup, which enhance interest in the world's most popular sport."
The Coca-Cola Company has been a sponsor of the World Cup since 1978, and, in 1990, extended its sponsorship of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Youth Championship and the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Football Development Program through the year 2000.
