THE CATO CORPORATION REPORTS SALES INCREASES OF 19 PERCENT FOR OCTOBER AND 22 PERCENT FOR THE THIRD QUARTER

 CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cato Corporation (NASDAQ- NMS: CACOA) today reported sales for the four weeks ended Oct. 30, 1993 of $27.9 million compared with $23.4 million for the same period a year ago, an increase of 19 percent. Same-store sales for October 1993, or sales in stores that were open in the comparable period last year, increased 5 percent following a 27 percent same-store sales increase for October 1992.
 Sales of $94.6 million for the third quarter ended Oct. 30, 1993 were 22 percent greater than sales of $77.7 million for the third quarter, 1992. The company's year-to-date sales wee $284.0 million compared to $230.4 million for 1992, an increase of 23 percent. Same-store sales were up 7 percent for the quarter and year-to-date same- store sales increased 9 percent.
 The Cato Corporation is a women's apparel specialty retailer operating under the names "Cato Fashion/Cato Plus' and "It's Fashion!" in 22 states. As of Oct. 30, 1993, The Cato Corporation operated 558 stores compared to 504 stores at Oct. 31, 1992.
