THE CATO CORPORATION REPORTS MAY SALES UP 31.1 PERCENT; COMPS UP 14.0 PERCENT

 CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cato Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: CACOA) reported that its May sales for the four weeks ended May 29 were $31.6 million, an increase of 31.1 percent over sales of $24.1 million for the comparable period ended May 30, 1992. Same-store sales for May 1993, or sales in stores that were open in the comparable month last year, increased 14.0 percent, following a 10 percent same-store sales increase for 1992.
 For the 17 weeks ended May 29, sales were $125.5 million compared with $100.2 million in the previous year, an increase of 25.3 percent. The company's year-to-date same-store sales increased 11.6 percent.
 The Cato Corporation is a women's apparel specialty retailer operating under the names "Cato Fashions/Cato Plus" and "It's Fashion!" in 22 states. As of May 29, 1993, the company had 539 stores compared to 496 stores at May 30, 1992.
