THE CATO CORPORATION REPORTS AUGUST SALES UP 22 PERCENT; COMPS UP 9 PCT.

 CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cato Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: CACOA) reported that its August sales for the four weeks ended Aug. 28, 1993, were $31.1 million, an increase of 22 percent from sales of $25.5 million for the comparable period ended Aug. 29, 1992. Same-store sales for August 1993, or sales in stores that were open in the comparable month last year, increased 9 percent, following an 18 percent same-store sales increase for August 1992.
 For the 30 weeks ended Aug. 28, 1993, sales were $220.6 million compared with $178.2 million for the same period in 1992, an increase of 24 percent. The company's year-to-date same-store sales increased 10 percent.
 The Cato Corporation is a women's apparel specialty retailer operating under the names "Cato Fashions/Cato Plus" and "It's Fashion!" in 22 states. As of Aug. 28, 1993, the company had 554 stores compared to 502 stores at Aug. 29, 1992.
