THE BON-TON STORES ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER SALES YORK, Pa., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc.
(NASDAQ: BONT), announced today that total sales for the five weeks ended Oct. 3, 1992 increased 3.9 percent to $28.0 million from the $27.0 million reported for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 4.7 percent.
Sales for the 35 weeks ended Oct. 3, 1992 rose 8.7 percent to $186.6 million from $171.7 million in the year ago period. Comparable store sales increased by 0.1 percent during the period. Michael L. Gleim, The Bon-Ton's senior executive vice president and chief administrative officer, commented, "Sales were particularly challenging this month as we were up against a 9 percent comparable store sales increase recorded in September 1991 and an 8 percent increase in September 1990." On Oct. 4, the company opened a 53,000 square foot store in Watertown, N.Y., and on Oct. 18 is scheduled to open a new 80,000 square foot store in Johnstown, Pa. With these two additions The Bon-Ton will operate 36 department stores in secondary markets in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and West Virginia.
