 THE BON-TON STORES ANNOUNCES MARCH SALES INCREASE OF 6.5 PERCENT
 YORK, Pa., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: BONT), announced today that total sales for the five weeks ended April 4, 1992, increased 6.5 percent to $25.6 million from the $24.1 million reported for the same period last year. Comparable store sales increased 4.2 percent.
 The year to date sales for the nine weeks ended April 4, 1992, rose 5.2 percent to $40.1 million from $38.1 million in the year ago period. Comparable store sales were up 2.7 percent for the nine weeks.
 Michael Gleim, the Bon-Ton's senior executive vice president and chief administrative officer, commented, "We are encouraged that, despite unfavorable weather conditions in our markets, the adverse effect of the calendar shift for the Easter holiday and continued competitive pressures, the company was able to deliver a strong sales performance in March." Gleim indicated that sales increases were realized as the result of the strengthening of promotional events and competitive pricing. Merchandise categories with significant increases included menswear, cosmetics, intimate apparel, women's and petites. These increases were somewhat tempered by decreases in dresses, coats and suits, juniors and children's.
 With the acquisition of the two-store Watt & Shand chain, which was completed effective April 4, 1992, The Bon-Ton now operates 35 full-line department stores in secondary markets in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and West Virginia. The stores carry broad assortments of brand- name fashions and accessories for women, men and children, as well as home furnishings.
