THE BOMBAY COMPANY, INC., ANNOUNCES STRONG SALES RESULTS FOR CHRISTMAS SEASON

 FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bombay Company, Inc. (NYSE: BBA) reported today that sales for the five-week period ended Jan. 2, 1994 increased 46% to $66,827,000 from $45,783,000 for the comparable five-week period ended Dec. 27, 1992. Same store sales for stores in existence more than one year increased 26%. For the 26-week period ended Jan. 2, 1994, total sales increased 45% to $173,943,000 from $119,539,000, while same store sales increased 24%.
 The same store sales includes 50 stores which were converted to a larger store format during the last 12 months. Excluding these larger format stores, same store sales for December increased 15% and for the 26-week period increased 15%.
 Robert E.M. Nourse, President and Chief Executive Officer, stated that this has been an outstanding performance with excellent results from both of the company's divisions. Strong execution in operations and outstanding merchandise were particularly significant in bringing about a great Christmas season.
