THE BANK OF ENGLAND PURCHASES BANCTEC CHECK PROCESSING SYSTEM

 DALLAS, April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- BancTec, Inc. (NASDAQ: BTEC) announced it has received a $1.7 million order from the Bank of England for a stand-alone check clearing system. The bank will utilize three BancTec 5500 document transports and associated peripheral equipment in its London clearing center.
 The Bank of England, founded in 1694, is the United Kingdom's central Bank and among other functions has a controlling and regulatory role in the British banking system. Every settlement bank in the UK has an account with the Bank of England. In addition, the Bank of England is utilized by the British government to handle many governmental financial transactions.
 BancTec's product offering will include its Transaction Processing System (TPS) software which provides solutions for independent check clearing, debit and credit clearing, and remittance processing applications. The Bank of England is the third major bank in the United Kingdom to purchase BancTec's TPS check processing system during the past year. Six of the 10 largest financial institutions in the United Kingdom now use BancTec equipment to process checks or other financial documents.
 With BancTec's TPS system, The Bank of England will no longer be required to utilize its mainframe computer for check clearing support. The BancTec check clearing solution is based on open systems architecture which gives the user the freedom to support total data interchange between multiple systems and support multiple vendors in the same environment. TPS is also one of the new generation of software products developed by BancTec that provides a clear path to image processing.
