THE ALPINE GROUP SIGNS COLLABORATION AGREEMENT WITH MONSANTO

NEW YORK, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alpine Group, Inc. (AMEX: AGI) announced today the execution of a Collaboration Agreement with the Chemical Group of Monsanto Company (NYSE: MTC).
The Agreement establishes the framework for a joint evaluation of market and business opportunities in the field of flat panel displays with a particular emphasis on the combination of Alpine Group's proprietary Polyvision display technology with Monsanto's proprietary flexible printed display technology. The Agreement further provides for technology and customer related support for Alpine's existing flat panel display business.
Steven S. Elbaum, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Alpine Group, Inc., stated, "This agreement furthers Alpine's interest in potential expansion of our flat panel display business to include low cost, lightweight, flexible flat panel displays. Under the agreement, Monsanto will provide valuable research, development and technical support to our existing glass-based display business through the end of 1994. This technical support and Monsanto's laboratory facilities will bolster the product development, testing and customer service capabilities of our Alpine PolyVision subsidiary. This relationship is particularly important to us now that we have entered the customer sampling phase of our commercial start-up."
As previously announced, Alpine has signed a definitive merger agreement with Superior TeleTec Inc. (AMEX: STT), a telecommunications manufacturing company, in which Superior TeleTec will become a wholly- owned subsidiary of Alpine. The transaction, which is valued at approximately $67 million, is expected to close in October.
The Alpine Group, Inc. is a holding company with continuing operations in information display and defense electronics and datacommunications businesses. Through its Alpine PolyVision, Inc. subsidiary, Alpine is developing PolyVision , a proprietary flat panel display technology, for commercial applications in a wide variety of markets. Alpine's information display activities also include Posterloid Corporation, which manufactures and markets menuboard display systems to fast food and convenience store markets. A wholly owned subsidiary, DNE Technologies, Inc., specializes in the advanced design, development, engineering and manufacture of electronic and avionic components and systems.
