THE ALPINE GROUP, INC. ANNOUNCES JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT WITH AVX CORP., SUBSIDIARY OF KYOCERA CORPORATION

NEW YORK, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alpine Group, Inc. (AMEX: AGI) today announced the signing of a joint venture agreement between its subsidiary, Alpine PolyVision, Inc., and AVX Corporation, a subsidiary of Kyocera Corporation (NYSE: KYO), for the development, manufacture and sale of PolyVision flat panel display components with a primary emphasis on low information content displays for the telecommunications, automotive and industrial measurement and control markets.
Steven S. Elbaum, chairman and chief executive officer of Alpine, stated, "This joint venture agreement supersedes an earlier agreement in principle with AVX which involved a PolyVision manufacturing license to AVX. This agreement establishes a 50/50 shareholding to jointly advance the commercialization of the PolyVision flat panel display technology in the targeted markets and at the same time benefit from AVX's technology, production and marketing resources. The agreement not only gives each partner an equity interest in a successful commercialization effort, it provides a strong and more formal framework for possible expansion of the cooperative venture to include higher resolution, full color flat panel displays for graphics and video applications."
Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, AVX will serve as exclusive distributor of PolyVision low information display components for the joint venture company and for Alpine PolyVision, Inc. in the Pacific Rim and to specific customers in the rest of the world.
Benedict Rosen, president and chief executive officer of AVX, stated, "We at AVX are pleased to move ahead with Alpine in the development and commercialization of the PolyVision flat panel display technology and look forward to the success of our joint venture company."
John Gillberton, vice president-manufacturing of AVX, has been named as president of the joint venture company. Mr. Elbaum will serve as chairman.
