THE ALLSTATE CORPORATION NAMES JAMES ANDRESS NEW OUTSIDE DIRECTOR

 NORTHBROOK, Ill., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Allstate Corporation (NYSE: ALL) today named James G. Andress, vice chairman and chief executive officer of Information Resources Inc. (IRI), as the ninth member of its board of directors.
 Andress joined IRI, the third largest market research company in the world, in 1989 as president and chief operating officer. In 1990, he became president and chief executive officer of IRI and in 1993 was elected vice chairman.
 Prior to joining IRI, Andress was chairman of SmithKline Pharmaceuticals, president and chief operating officer of Sterling Drug, Inc., and president of the home care division of Abbott Laboratories. He currently serves on the boards of Information Resources Inc., Liposome Co., Inc., NeoRx Corp., Sepracor, Inc., Genelabs, Inc., Genetics Institute, Inc., Optioncare, Inc. and Walsh Medical Systems.
 The Allstate Corporation is the parent of Allstate Insurance Company, the nation's largest publicly held property and casualty insurance company, with more than 20 million customers and approximately 14,500 full-time agents in the U.S. and Canada. Established in 1931 by Sears, Roebuck & Co., Allstate is also a major life insurer. In June 1993, Allstate had the largest initial public offering of stock in U.S. history.
