THANK YOU.

BEFORE closing the curtain on 2002, the Daily News would like to once again acknowledge and thank those readers who took the time to write to us and made Your Opinions, the letters to the editor columns, one of the liveliest and best read parts of the paper.

The list of published letter writers, slightly more than 2,000, grew by more than 25 percent this year, up from around 1,400 in 2001. As usual, we received about 10 times as many letters as we had room to publish - one of the reasons we ask you to keep your letters short. We tried to publish a cross section that represented what our readers were saying. We also tried to give space to the lone voices crying out in the wilderness.

The letter writers were rowdy - as usual - starting off the year with a debate on the war in Afghanistan and ending it arguing about the righteousness of a war in Iraq. Many writers got into personal spats with other writers. And that was OK, too. Your Opinions is for your opinions, and they frequently clash. By far the most written-about subject of the year was the proposed Valley secession. Candidates as well as voters touted their positions, and more than a few paid consultants dropped us a line.

Along the way, a lot of people - public officials and letter writers, too - got verbally disciplined in the columns. Mayor James Hahn and Gov. Gray Davis were by far the favorite targets, but Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Roy Romer and Cardinal Roger Mahony also got their fair share of abuse.

The Daily News got smacked across the knuckles with the ruler, too.

We'd like to thank you letter writers for speaking out and letting us know what you thought really mattered. We tried to keep track of the contributors to Your Opinion and we begin publishing your names today and will continue to publish them through the end of the week, along with the best cartoons from View From the Valley by Patrick O'Connor.

This is our way of saying thank you. Keep the letters coming, and if you haven't written to us before, give it a shot. It doesn't hurt and it's important for people to see what others are thinking.
