TGS releases OpenGL for HP 9000 PA-RISC workstations; signals start of OpenGL, Open Inventor and VRML for HP systems.
The product allows OpenGL applications to be hosted on HP workstations and viewed on any X11 display device. TGS will continue to optimize the software-rendering version and is investigating methods to best utilize HP's new VISUALIZE Graphics Technologies systems within the product.
The OpenGL for HP-UX product release by TGS follows earlier releases of OpenGL by TGS in support of Sun Solaris and Apple Power Mac platforms.
''TGS is a long-time HP developer, with a successful record of partnering with HP in joint sales, marketing and development efforts,'' said Mark A. Canepa, general manager for HP's Workstation Systems Division. ''The TGS PHIGS+ graphics software is part of HP's successful U.S. Navy TAC4 effort, and we see future opportunities with their OpenGL products.
''We are pleased that such a proven software vendor such as TGS has chosen to deliver OpenGL products to our full line of PA-RISC- based workstations.''
Along with the OpenGL for HP-UX product, TGS is porting the C++ 3-D graphics toolkit Open Inventor to HP systems. Open Inventor utilizes OpenGL for graphics rendering, and allows developers to create sophisticated 3-D applications in a fraction of the time over using OpenGL.
Also, TGS was key in the effort to utilize Open Inventor as the basis for VRML 1.0, an emerging 3-D Internet standard, and recently introduced WebSpace, the world's first 3-D/VRML browser. TGS will deliver both VRML 1.0 and WebSpace support within their port of Open Inventor to HP hardware.
TGS has released Open Inventor for IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, Microsoft Win32 (NT/95), and is porting the product to HP, Apple, DEC and IBM OS/2. Open Inventor for HP-UX is slated for early 1996. The announcement by TGS of OpenGL and Open Inventor for HP-UX ensures that HP workstations will support these emerging graphics tools and technologies.
''The cross-platform availability of OpenGL, Open Inventor and VRML software is spurring the recent growth in the 3-D hardware and software market,'' claimed Terry Baker, president of TGS. ''HP's VISUALIZE Graphics, with our ports of OpenGL and Open Inventor, certainly raises the price/performance bar to the next level. HP is delivering better graphics products at lower prices, something all customers enjoy.''
Template Graphics Software was the first vendor to port Open Inventor to any non-SGI hardware system and deliver the product to IBM AIX and Sun Solaris systems. TGS's Open Inventor for Win32 is the first for Windows NT and Windows 95, and includes support for UNIX, Win32 and MFC developers.
TGS is the selected OpenGL product and technology partner for Apple Computer Inc., and has the only direct-to-hardware implementation of OpenGL for Solaris systems. TGS is also the only vendor to be developing support for OpenGL on Microsoft Win32s (Windows 3.1) systems.
Template Graphics Software and European subsidiary G5G produce cross-platform graphics software tools and utilities for Fortune 500, government, commercial, academic and research organizations. TGS has offered cross-platform graphics software since 1982 and is the largest independent producer of graphics software tools in the world.
TGS is a source licensee of OpenGL and Open Inventor from Silicon Graphics. Template Graphics Software, with headquarters in San Diego, is a member of ANSI/ISO graphics committees, the VRML Technical Forum and the OpenGL Advisory Forum and is active in establishing new standards and directions for computer graphics technologies.
Hewlett-Packard Co. is a leading global manufacturer of computing, communications and measurement products and services recognized for excellence in quality and support. HP has 98,600 employees and had revenue of $25 billion in its 1994 fiscal year. -0-
