TEXTRON LYCOMING ISSUES REVISED SERVICE LIVES
 ALF502 ROTATING HARDWARE
STRATFORD, Conn., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Textron Lycoming today announced that, as a result of a recent test program undertaken to extend the published service life of ALF502 rotating hardware, the company will be issuing revised service lives for some compressor and turbine disks on this engine.
As a result of the test program, some of the ALF502 disks will have their lives extended, as will the compressor impeller, and some disks will have their service lives reduced in cases where crack initiation of high-time units had occurred at earlier than anticipated cycles. The net overall result of this disk re-lifting program targets a reduction in ALF502 hourly LLP parts costs of approximately 9 percent.
"Studies carried out on test engines and spin pit testing of field- aged rotating hardware demonstrated life margins beyond the current published retirement life of engine rotating hardware. However, to eliminate any questions or concerns on the part of our ALF502 operating customers, we initiated a draw-down plan to retire high time/cycle disks from the operating fleet," said Noel Nightingale, Lycoming's director of Turbofan programs.
For currently fielded ALF502 disks that will experience a reduction in previously published lives, an Airworthiness Directive will be issued and Textron Lycoming will provide operators with pro rata financial assistance above and beyond existing service life warranties and maintenance cost protection programs.
"We're not only applying pro-rated prices to the shorter life disk hardware, we're also sharing in the costs associated with assessing the affected hardware and any resultant earlier than planned shop visits. ALF502 engine operators could, in the longer term, benefit from the 9 percent overall LLP cost reduction resulting from those disks given a life extension," Nightingale said.
The credits are being applied retroactive to May 1, 1991, the date the sample draw-down commenced. Credits for early shop visits resulting from the draw-down will extend from May 1, 1991 through March 31, 1993.
By virtue of Lycoming's life extension program, changes aimed at replacing certain stages of compressor disks with improved materials were accomplished. These improved disks are standard bill of material in the current production LF507 engine recently certified for the advanced BAe146 and RJ70 aircraft.
"Our ALF502 customer assistance program, backed by the full personnel and financial resources of Textron Lycoming, reflects our commitment to treat our customers as we would expect to be treated if we were the customer", Nightingale added.
