TEXAS INVESTORS ACQUIRE OPTIGRAPHICS, CHANGE COMPANY NAME TO SCORE GROUP
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Optigraphics Corporation, the manufacturer of SCORE and PINNACLE sports trading cards, announced today that it has been acquired by Grand Slam Acquisition, Inc. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Following the purchase, Optigraphics' name was changed to Score Group, Inc. to more closely identify the company with its principal brand.
Score Group holds licenses to manufacture trading cards featuring players in professional baseball, football and hockey. SCORE trading cards are sold nationwide by convenience and variety stores, mass merchandisers, hobby shops and toy outlets. SCORE currently enjoys a strong market share in conventional sports trading cards and is uniquely positioned to expand into other segments of the trading card market.
Grand Slam Acquisition is a corporation formed by Grauer & Wheat Investments, Inc. of Dallas and Acadia Partners, L.P. of Fort Worth. Grauer & Wheat operates in partnership with proven corporate executives and specializes in providing the financial expertise and capital necessary to complete leveraged acquisitions. Acadia Partners is a $1.7 billion private investment partnership that specializes in leveraged acquisitions, recapitalizations and high-yield investments.
"Acadia Partners and Grauer & Wheat are committed to providing strong ownership for SCORE and developing the company to its fullest potential," said Doug Wheat, co-chairman of Grauer & Wheat.
SCORE baseball, hockey and football cards have a demonstrated history of innovation. SCORE, for instance, was the first brand to feature color photographs on card backs. SCORE also was the first to use high-fashion photography and creative subsets in its trading card collections. The company's specialty cards have featured Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Eric Lindros and Bobby Orr, all of which have become highly prized collectibles.
The company announced last month that it will enter the premium card market in January 1992 with the introduction of PINNACLE football. PINNACLE will be produced in limited quantities, utilizing the highest- quality materials, while incorporating innovations in design, photography and anti-counterfeiting safeguards.
Score Group is based in Grand Prairie, a Dallas suburb.
