TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S FASTEST COLOR
 AND MONOCHROME NOTEBOOKS
TEMPLE, Texas, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) today announced four new 486-based TravelMate(TM) Notebook Computers. With these new models, TI offers the broadest selections of 486-based notebook computers available today -- with processors from 25MHz to 50MHz, a choice of monochrome or color displays, main memory from 2MB to 20MB, hard disk drives from 60MB to 200MB, and suggested retail prices from $1,999 to $4,499.
"With this announcement, TI takes the lead in providing the industry's smallest, lightest and fastest monochrome and color 486 notebook computers," said Nassir Ahmed, worldwide portable products marketing director of TI's Peripheral Products Division. "No other manufacturer offers such a wide range of powerful 486 notebook products to satisfy diverse application requirements. With ready-to-run, optimized Windows(TM) software and extended battery life, the TravelMates offer 'no compromise' solutions for users who demand high performance and portability."
"Each model in the TravelMate series offers outstanding value," Ahmed continued. "For example, with the announced price points, the TravelMate color notebooks are an attractive alternative to competitive 486 monochrome models."
 TravelMate 4000 WinDX2(TM):
The Ultimate Portable Speed Machine -- with a 50MHz Processor
TI's new TravelMate 4000 WinDX2 50MHz notebook computer is the fastest, lightest and most powerful 486 notebook computer available in a 5.6 pound package. This ultimate portable speed machine features 8MB of memory and a 200MB hard disk drive. The TravelMate 4000 WinDX2/50 also includes the new, small Microsoft(R) BallPoint(R) with QuickPort(TM) connection that allows for easy snap-on and snap-off, thereby eliminating the need for cable.
The TravelMate 4000 WinDX2/50 features a 10-inch VGA display with 64 gray scales and automatically supports an external Super VGA monitor with 256 colors. And with the TravelMate 4000 WinDX2 weighing 5.6 pounds including battery and measuring 8.5-inch x 11-inch x 1.8-inch, it's now easier than ever to take 486 power -- even 50MHz performance -- wherever it's needed. The suggested retail price for the TravelMate 4000 WinDX2/50 is $3,899.
 TravelMate WinsSLC(TM): 486SLC Performance at 386SL Prices
The TravelMate WinSLC sets a new price point for entry-level high- performance portable computing. With a 25MHz TI486SLC processor, pre- installed Windows 3.1, TI's TravelPoint(TM) pointing device, BatteryPro(TM) power management system, and TI software utilities, the TravelMate WinSLC offers 486 performance at an extremely affordable price. While pricing is comparable to 386SL notebooks, the TravelMate WinSLC's performance is more than twice that of 25MHz 386SL models.
In addition, the standard configuration for the TravelMate WinSLC contains 2MB of memory expandable to 6MB and a 60MB hard disk drive. State-of-the-art 486SLC portable performance has never been this affordable -- with a suggested retail price of $1,999.
 TravelMate 4000 WinDX2/40 Color and WinSX(TM)/25 Color:
Affordable 486 Color, Unprecedented Power and Value
The new TravelMate 486 color notebook computers give high performance, outstanding value and vibrant colors -- up to 256 colors on a large 9.4-inch diagonal display. All 256 colors are simultaneously displayed at full VGA 640 x 480 resolution to make information much easier to work with and view.
TI TravelMate color notebooks offer two models. Users can choose either the TM4000 WinDX2 40MHz color model with 8MB of memory and a 200MB hard disk drive, or the TM4000 WinSX 25MHz color model with 4MB of memory and a 120MB hard disk drive. These color notebooks also include the easy snap-on and snap-off Microsoft BallPoint with QuickPort connection. Both models offer an affordable color alternative to competitive monochrome notebooks with a suggested retail price of $3,699 for the WinSX/25 color and $4,499 for the WinDX2/40 color.
With the introduction of these four models and the TravelMate 4000 WinSX/25 and WinDX(TM)/25 units introduced in June 1992, TI now offers the widest selection of powerful 486 notebook computers.
 Windows-Ready Software Environment
The TravelMate notebooks have been carefully engineered, both hardware and software, to make Windows applications run fast and smooth. Working in Windows has never been easier. Users can power up into Windows in less than 30 seconds -- out of the box -- since Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS(R) 5.0 are pre-installed on the hard disk. But the TravelMate notebook computers provide much more than just pre-loaded software. To help get the most out of Windows, standard configurations include a portable pointing device, an oversized cursor, Windows power conservation software, and custom utilities for quick entry and exit into and out of Windows. The TravelMate's new Drop N' Go software utility allows users to accelerate into applications, saving time and battery life. And best of all, users never have to leave Windows. Hardware setup or systems maintenance functions can be viewed and easily selected through Windows menus.
 Long Battery Life
As a result of TI's design breakthrough, users can fly coast-to- coast with 486 power and have battery life to spare. The TI revolutionary BatteryPro power management system provides long battery life. BatteryPro is compatible with Microsoft's Advanced Power Management(TM) (APM). In addition, BatteryPro shows the battery life remaining at a glance. Now users get ample time to take advantage of state-of-the-art 486 processing.
 Expansion Capabilities
A full range of options are available to provide easy connectivity to these new TravelMate notebooks -- including lightweight, snap-on modules for Ethernet(R) or Token Ring(R) LANs, as well as SCSI- compatible devices. TI also offers an optional 14,400 bps V.32 bis modem with 9600 bps send/receive fax capability. This modem plugs into an internal slot in the TravelMate notebooks.
The monochrome TravelMate WinSLC will be available in November, and the TravelMate 4000 WinDX2/50 will be available in December. The color TravelMate 4000 WinSX/25 and color TravelMate 4000 WinDX2/40 will be available in January. All these new TravelMate notebooks will be available from TI's extensive network of distributors and dealers worldwide.
