TEXAS INSTRUMENTS DSEG PURCHASES $10.5 MILLION IN MENTOR GRAPHICS TOP-DOWN DESIGN TOOLS, SERVICES

DALLAS, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at the Design Automation Conference (DAC), Mentor Graphics Corp. (NASDAQ: MENT) announced a $10.5 million sale of its top-down design software tools for systems, including ASICs, FPGAs and printed circuit boards (PCBs), to Texas Instruments Defense Systems & Electronics Group (DSEG), Dallas. After an extensive evaluation, Mentor Graphics software was selected to replace installed EDA tools at TI's DSEG.
DSEG, at the forefront of the defense industry, is applying top-down design methodologies to its advanced technologies, such as high- performance design, microprocessors, systems and sensors to defense technologies produced by the United States and its allies. DSEG was the winner of the coveted Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1992.
"We need an EDA supplier who can partner with us to answer challenges, such as improving standard design methodologies and processes, reducing our cycle time and achieving six sigma quality designs. Mentor Graphics, in turn, is gaining first-hand knowledge of the complex processes required to design very large advanced systems," said Bob McLendon, DSEG's vice-president of engineering. "This two-way partnership model is crucial for the success of system and EDA houses."
"DSEG is a defense contractor that continues to win big despite downturns in the defense industry -- accomplishing more in less time with fewer people," said Thomas H. Bruggere, Mentor Graphics chairman and chief executive officer. "Mentor Graphics' concept-to-production top-down design enables DSEG to commit to efficiency and profitability up-front by delivering openness, design reuse, tightly integrated VHDL and synthesis tools, top-down design kits supporting technology independence, and a local design center in place equipped to support them."
DSEG is adding 300 seats to its existing installed Mentor Graphics base. These tools include Top Down Design-Solver(TM), FastScan(TM) and FlexTest(TM), (Mentor Graphics' automatic test pattern generation tools), Board Station(R) and MCM Station(R). Design teams at DSEG are using Mentor Graphics' tools for top-down design to develop many different, very dense ASICs and FPGAs.
"We selected Mentor Graphics as our core, backbone EDA vendor because of the strength that sets them apart -- their OpenDoor Program(SM), third-party relationships and standards thrust. These issues are critical to our success," said Bob Aubrey, DSEG's electronics strategy manager. "In addition, top-down design plays a critical role in the development of ASICs and boards used in our complex systems."
"DSEG is always stretching technology and along with it the capabilities of the vendors who work with them. Their technological challenges are always plotted at the leading edge of the technology curve," said Mike Schumacher, Mentor Graphics Synthesis, Simulation and Test Division general manager. "As their partner, we will help DSEG continue to push the technology edge by providing a close partnership, the industry's premier concept-to-production design tools, and the best value-added services available."
DSEG designs and manufactures precision-guided weapons, airborne radar systems, infrared vision equipment and other electro-optic electronic warfare systems. For example, approximately 65 percent of all air-to-ground smart weapons used in Desert Storm were DSEG systems.
