TEXAS INSTRUMENTS ANNOUNCES COOPERATIVE EFFORT TO DEVELOP OPEN STANDARDS FOR PRINTER MANAGEMENT

TEMPLE, Texas, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) today announced its participation in the development of an industry- standard open printer management model for desktop, local area and wide area network printers.
At its August 1993 meeting held in Lexington, Ky., the Network Printing Alliance (NPA) voted to team with the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) in defining the significant printer features, or printer management objects. Because of this initiative, a team was formed under the DMTF to identify these printer management objects and then to map them to a Management Information File for use with the Desktop Management interface developed by the DMTF. Additionally, these same objects can then be defined in a Management Information Base for use with the widely accepted Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
"The definition of common features, or objects, for printer management will be a significant step forward in establishing a standard set of functions and ease of use features for controlling printers. Aligning the DMTF with the SNMP can provide a path for common management of printers regardless of whether they are attached locally or through a LAN," said Ron Smith, manager of Advanced Printer Technology Development at Texas Instruments. "The establishment of a standard data base to describe and manage printer functions will allow application and systems developers to begin the development of standard printer management and control software. The ultimate winner in the development of this standard will be printer users. This standard will ultimately free the user from dealing with the myriad of technical details associated with setting up and controlling printers."
To achieve this goal of defining the printer management objects, a meeting was held Sept. 29 in Denver. In addition to Texas Instruments, companies in attendance included Adobe Systems Inc., Compaq Computer Corp., Data Products, Inc., FarPoint Communications, Hewlett-Packard Company, Lexmark International, Pennant Systems, Okidata, QMS Inc., Unisys and Xerox.
Through the cooperative efforts of these companies and others, basic agreement was reached in the definition of these printer management objects. A follow-up meeting is currently planned for Oct. 26 in Portland, Ore., to further refine these definitions.
"Texas Instruments has been a key participant and leader in the development of open printing standards such as the IEEE's P1284 working group, the NPA and now the DMTF. We will continue to work with these open standards groups as well as with key individual printing solution providers," said Glenn Neland, Texas Instruments Printer Business Unit manager.
Texas Instruments and other printer manufacturers will be providing DMI technology demonstrations at the upcoming DMTF Developers Conference on Oct. 18 in San Francisco. Texas Instruments is a member of the DMTF beta program in addition to being a founding member of the NPA.
