TEXAS EASTERN TRANSMISSION CORPORATION CURTAILS SYSTEM CAPACITY DUE TO FACILITY OUTAGES

HOUSTON, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation (TETCO) said today that extremely harsh weather conditions caused some equipment failures that have resulted in several compressor unit outages, thereby necessitating some system curtailment.
TETCO, which services the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions including the New York City area, today declared a "force majeure" event and notified its customers it would limit deliveries. Natural gas deliveries are being reduced by approximately 15 percent of the total throughput, or about 450 million cubic feet per day. TETCO is asking all of its customers to assist in every way possible during this period by reducing the natural gas demand.
The major equipment outages occurred at Barton, Ala., and Holbrook, Pa. TETCO is working on emergency repairs to the equipment, and expects some facilities to be restored to service in the next day or two.
While the weather is forecast to moderate for the first part of this week, the forecast calls for another cold snap beginning later this week, which could cause the curtailment to extend into the weekend.
Customers, including Algonquin Gas Transmission Company, will receive a pro rata share of the available capacity based on the customer's current firm entitlements. As a result, Algonquin is also declaring force majeure and curtailing natural gas deliveries to its customers by approximately 25 percent.
Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and Algonquin Gas Transmission Company are subsidiaries of Panhandle Eastern Corporation (NYSE: PEL), which operates one of the nation's largest interstate natural gas pipeline systems, providing natural gas to the Midwest and Northeast markets.
