TEXACO IS A SPONSOR OF THE 5TH ANNUAL NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION; TO BE HELD AT PACE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Texaco Inc. (NYSE: TX) announced today that it is a sponsor of the Fifth Annual National Environmental Law Moot Court Competition to be held at Pace University School of Law in White Plains, Feb. 18 through Feb. 20.
Student teams from 68 law schools across the United States will participate in the event, the biggest environmental moot court competition in the country. The event, which tests the oral and written advocacy skills a valuable opportunity to experience first-hand environmental litigation.
"We at Texaco are proud to be a sponsor for the third year in a row of the Environmental Moot Court Competition at Pace University," said Rickard F. Pfizenmayer, assistant general counsel of Texaco Inc. "The competition demonstrates our challenge as a major energy supplier to balance the demands of the environment while meeting the demands of our customers for affordable energy at fair prices. Indeed, this forum provides these future attorneys a valuable learning experience in the environmental law field."
Student teams participating in the Moot Court Competition prepared briefs in November on a hypothetical case written for the competition by the Environmental Law Institute in Washington.
"For students at the nation's law schools, there is nothing else like the event at Pace," said William Slye, director of Environmental Legal Programs and a Professor of Law at Pace. "There is no other moot court competition of this size in which law students can test their skills in issues critical to the environment. This is unique."
The case to be debated this year addresses the issue of interstate transportation and disposal of hazardous waste. In the competition, each school team writes a legal brief from the perspective of each of the three parties involved -- state government and a waste disposal company in one state and a waste disposal company in the neighboring state. The state statute in question prohibits the import and export of hazardous material.
The chief judge at the final round of arguments will be the Honorable Levin H. Campbell, Circuit Court Judge, United States Court of Appeals, First Circuit.
The final awards ceremony and reception will be hosted by Texaco at its executive offices in Harrison, N.Y., on Saturday, Feb. 20. The reception will also feature exhibits by several environmental organizations of Westchester County, N.Y., including Teatown Lake Reservation, Westchester Country Tree Trust, Federated Conservationists of Westchester County, Greenburgh Nature Center and The Nature Conservancy.
