 TEXACO INC. ACQUIRES DOUBLE HULL TANKER;
 SHIP TO BE NAMED 'STAR OHIO' AFTER HISTORIC WORLD WAR II VESSEL
 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Texaco Inc. (NYSE: TX) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Texaco Panama Inc., has taken delivery of a new double-hull motor tanker. The 900-foot vessel, which can carry up to one million barrels of oil, is named the "STAR OHIO", after the company's historic World War II tanker, the "OHIO".
 The vessel was built at Samsung's Koje, Korea, shipyard to strict American Bureau of Shipping Standards, including ice-strengthening. Texaco intends to operate her in worldwide trading, carrying crude oil for the company and its affiliates. The vessel represents Texaco's ongoing commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.
 In accordance with a time-honored maritime tradition, Mrs. Weezie Davidson, wife of Texaco Inc. Vice President and Corporate Secretary Carl B. Davidson, christened the "STAR OHIO" during ceremonies in Korea this past weekend.
 In 1942, the original "OHIO" took part in an Allied operation to supply the island of Malta with much needed food and fuel after it had been cut off from the outside world by an Axis blockade of the Mediterranean Sea. It was one of only five of the original 14 merchant ships in the convoy that made it through the blockade. The ordeal of the tanker "OHIO" became a legend: she was torpedoed and holed; wreckage from an exploding Stuka crashed on to her deck; her boilers blew up and her engines failed; she was twice abandoned and twice reboarded. Repeated attempts to take her in tow failed; but the tanker would not sink, as if aware that on her depended the survival of Malta. With the decks awash, she was lashed between two destroyers and led into the Grand Harbour with her valuable cargo intact.
 Texaco's international marine fleet comprises 33 owned and term-chartered ocean-going tankers, totalling about 4.8 million deadweight tons.
