 WILLIAM C. STEERE JR. TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Texaco Inc. (NYSE: TX) announced today that William C. Steere Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE), has been elected to the company's board of directors. Steere's election, which is effective immediately, brings to 15 the number of directors on Texaco's board.
 Pfizer is a research-based, diversified health care company with global operations.
 In making the announcement, Alfred C. DeCrane Jr., Texaco Inc.'s chairman of the board, stated: "Bill Steere's experience and success in the international business arena provide added insights as we implement our strategic plans in this increasingly competitive global marketplace. We're pleased to welcome Bill Steere to Texaco's already strong and independent board."
 Steere began his career with Pfizer in 1959 as a medical service representative and moved through sales management and headquarters product management. His 1969 promotion to director of marketing for Pfizer Latin America expanded his business experience to include international marketing. In 1972, Steere returned to domestic pharmaceutical management as vice president-general manager of Roerig, a marketing division of Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. He was promoted to vice president and general manager for Pfizer Laboratories in 1980, and in 1983 he was elected a corporate vice president of Pfizer Inc.
 Steere was named President of Pfizer Pharmaceutical Group in 1986. He was elected president and chief executive officer in 1991 and chairman in March of this year.
 Steere, 56, earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Stanford University in 1959. In addition to serving on the Pfizer board, he is a director of Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co., the New York Botanical Garden, the American Diabetes Association, the Regional Plan Association, the U.S. Council for International Business, WNET-Thirteen, the Business Council and The Business Roundtable. He is also chairman-elect of the board of directors of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association.
