TEST OF NO(X) CONTROL TECHNOLOGY AT MORRO BAY POWER PLANT

MORRO BAY, Calif., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Brown and Caldwell, a national environmental engineering firm, has been retained by Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s (PG&E) research and development department to design, procure and install an advanced selective catalytic reduction (ASCR) research facility at PG&E's Morro Bay Power Plant, located in Morro Bay, Calif.
The project is part of PG&E's strategy to evaluate alternative technologies to reduce NO(x) (nitrogen oxides) emissions from fossil- fuel-fired power plants. The research facility is designed to evaluate the retrofit of NO(x)-reducing catalysts into boiler ducts between the economizer section and the air preheater. If successful, the ASCR system could be significantly more cost-effective than traditional SCR systems, which require construction of an entirely new structure at the plant.
Start-up is slated for the first quarter of 1993. Brown and Caldwell will manage design and procurement from its office in Denver. The company will manage construction activities at the site in Morro Bay.
Brown and Caldwell is a multi-discipline environmental consulting firm serving government and industry for more than 45 years. Headquartered in Pleasant Hill, Calif., the company has more than 900 employees, 18 offices and three environmental laboratories.
