TERRA INDUSTRIES REPORTS MAY REVENUE UP 11 PERCENT

SIOUX CITY, Iowa, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Terra Industries Inc. (NYSE: TRA) today announced May revenue increased 11 percent to $276.8 million in 1993 from $249.1 million in May of last year. About half the increase is due to revenue from the Canadian fertilizer manufacturing/farm distribution network acquired in April. Without this acquisition, May revenue was up almost 5 percent to $260.6 million.
Year-to-date revenue totaled $603.3 million, a decrease of 4 percent from $629.9 million in the comparable 1992 period. Year-to-date revenue without the impact of the acquisition was $580.7 million. The 1993 year-to-date decrease is primarily attributable to a slow start in field preparation and planting as a result of the unusually wet winter and spring weather.
Revenue from Terra's distribution operations increased 6 percent to $246.9 million in the month of May from $232.6 million during the comparable period last year. The two wholly owned Canadian farm service centers reported May revenue of $2.4 million. Results from the remaining 30 outlets, owned with Canadian partners, are accounted for using the equity method, and their sales are not included in total revenue for the company.
Manufactured fertilizer revenue for May increased 80 percent to $33.0 million from $18.3 million in the same period last year. This increase resulted from the impact of the Canadian acquisition. Without the contribution from the acquisition, manufactured fertilizer revenue for the month of May was $17.5 million, down 4 percent from the same period last year.
Burton M. Joyce, president and CEO, said, "Despite the weather, we are confident that 1993 will be a good year for Terra. Because of the abnormally wet planting season, farmers have cut back on dry fertilizer applications. However, applications of both liquid fertilizers and chemicals after crops emerge should result in carryover of sales into June and July.
"As a reminder, revenue comparisons for any one month to the prior- year month are not necessarily indicative of the full year's or even the full quarter's results. Weather conditions affect when crop input applications occur, and changes in product mix and in our inventory cost position also affect profitability."
Terra Industries Inc., with 1992 revenue over $1 billion, is a leading marketer and producer of fertilizer, crop protection products, seed and services for agriculture.
