TERRA INDUSTRIES REPORTS JUNE SALES UP OVER 40 PERCENT

SIOUX CITY, Iowa, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Terra Industries Inc. (NYSE: TRA) today announced June revenue increased 41 percent to $217.1 million in 1993 from $153.7 million in June of last year. The Canadian acquisition, completed in April 1993, contributed $18.1 million. Without the impact of that acquisition, revenue for June was up 29 percent.
Burton M. Joyce, president and CEO, said, "As we had anticipated at the end of our first quarter, weather conditions have caused about a month delay in this year's growing season. Consequently, Terra experienced a strong June, picking up sales that slipped from April and May. Current trends indicate that July sales should also be somewhat better than last year."
June revenue from Terra's distribution operations increased 33 percent to $190.7 million from $143.1 million last year. Results from the 50 percent owned Canadian outlets acquired earlier this year are accounted for using the equity method, and their sales are not included in total revenue for the company.
Manufactured fertilizer revenue for June increased 190 percent to $30.6 million from $10.5 million in the same period last year. Without the impact of the Canadian plant, manufactured fertilizer revenue for the month of June was $16.2 million, up 54 percent from the year-ago period.
Year-to-date revenue totaled $820.3 million, including $40.6 million from the Canadian operations. Excluding the contribution from the acquisition, year-to-date revenue is about even with the $783.6 million reported for the comparable six-month period last year. This was achieved despite the slow start to this year's planting season as a result of unusually wet winter and spring weather.
Terra Industries Inc., with 1992 revenue over $1 billion, is a leading marketer and producer of fertilizer, crop protection products, seed and services for agriculture.
