TERAYON LAUNCHES CMX LINE OF CABLE MODEM EXTENSIONS.
The ability to integrate cable modems with add-on devices allows cable television operators to initially deploy modems for high-speed Internet access, then to provide additional services and capabilities to subscribers as requested. This 'pay as you go' approach could be more cost-effective compared to broadly deploying home gateways that support multiple services in one device, but are primarily used for high-speed Internet access. Cable operators can also maximize their investments in cable modems, as the modems do not have to be replaced to deliver additional services.
Terayon's initial CMx model is the Vx, which enables a TJ 700 series modem to function as an embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (eMTA), supporting up to two lines of Voice-over-IP (VoIP) cable telephony service and high-speed Internet access.
"The combination of our CMxs and our TJ 700 series of cable modems gives cable operators a 'pay as you go' model for rolling-out cable telephony and other new services. Leveraging an installed base of subscribers already using TJ 700 modems, operators can aggressively market new CMx-supported services while minimizing costs and inconvenience to the subscriber," said Peter Hung, vice president of marketing for Terayon.
