TENNESSEE AQUARIUM SITE OF AIRCO MEDICAL GASES
 SEMINAR ON FDA REGULATIONS
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Airco Gases, the U.S. Gases business of the multinational BOC Group, today, held a medical gases seminar and reception for 250 area hospital, home health care and nursing home professionals, at the Tennessee Aquarium. Featured speakers, including Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigator Donald Dodson, and Airco Regional Quality Assurance Manager Michael D. Baselice, addressed changes in Federal Food and Drug Administration rules and regulations.
"We hosted this meeting as part of our ongoing commitment to quality and community responsibility," say Bill Romans, Airco Medical Gases District Manager, and organizer of the event. "Through educational outreach programs such as this, we want to help our customers familiarize themselves with current FDA regulations, and know their own and suppliers' responsibilities when meeting those standards." Romans notes that some organizations granted their employees continuing education credits for attending.
 Program Agenda
The speakers' portion of the program, which ran from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., began with a talk by FDA's Dodson on recent and proposed changes in federal regulations. Airco's Baselice then discussed the ways in which Airco strives to ensure a higher level of performance than the government requires. The talks were followed by a question and answer period.
When the aquarium closed at 6 p.m., attendees and their families were treated to an hors d'oeuvres reception and private tour of the $45 million aquarium, which boasts the largest freshwater tank (139,000 gallons) in the United States. The aquarium houses approximately 4,000 living animals, representing more than 350 different species of fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.
 Meeting and Exceeding Performance Standards
"We wanted our audience to enjoy themselves while they were learning," says Baselice. "We hope they came away with a better understanding of the regulations, and a better understanding of Airco. We're proud of the systems we've implemented to make sure that the company meets, if not exceeds, regulatory and industry standards," he says. He points to Airco's internal procedures on oxygen purity as an example: U.S.P. standards require minimum oxygen purity of 99.0 percent. Airco's internal procedures mandate a purity level of at least 99.2 percent.
"It's easy to put together a mission or a vision statement and talk about what we want to do," he continues. "But unless you have management systems (most critical), skilled people, and capital resources to fulfill that mission, it's of little value to the customer and/or the end user and ultimately, of little value to us."
Airco Gases is a leading manufacturer and supplier of industrial gases and gas handling technology in the United States. The company's primary gas products include cryogenic and non-cryogenic nitrogen and oxygen, as well as argon, carbon dioxide, helium, hydrogen and a variety of medical, rare and special gases.
