TENNECO NAMES WILLIAM L. WEISS TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 HOUSTON, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of Tenneco Inc. (NYSE: TGT) announced the election today of William L. Weiss, chairman of the board of Ameritech Corp., to membership on the company's board effective immediately. The action increases the size of the board to 11 members, nine of whom are outside directors.
 Weiss, 64, has spent his 43-year career in the telecommunications industry. Under his leadership, Ameritech has launched an extensive restructuring to transform the one-time monopoly into a customer-focused competitor in the emerging markets of interactive data and video information services and long distance and wireless communications, as well as traditional local phone service.
 "It is a pleasure and a privilege to have Bill join the Tenneco board," said Mike Walsh, chairman and chief executive officer. "He brings to this position the valuable insights and experience of a professional life spent leading large organizations through dramatic change."
 Weiss was named chairman and chief executive officer of Ameritech in 1982. Prior to that he was employed at several of Ameritech's regional subsidiaries. He served as president of Illinois Bell Telephone Co. in 1981 and became chairman in 1982. From 1978 to 1981 he was president of Indiana Bell Telephone Co. and was named to the board in 1978. He also served as vice president of operations at Wisconsin Telephone Co. (now Wisconsin Bell) from 1976 to 1978.
 His career began at Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania where he held positions of increasing responsibility from 1951 to 1976.
 Weiss holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Penn State University and serves on the boards of directors of Abbott
Laboratories, Inc., Merrill Lynch and The Quaker Oats Co. He is a trustee of the Committee for Economic Development, Northwestern University, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera of Chicago.
 Weiss is also chairman of the board of The Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, the Conference Board, and the Board of the Illinois Business Roundtable.
