TENNANT'S LOVELY KILLS OFF DR WHO; Time Lord David set to quit to star with Emily.

THIS is the girl who finally spells the end for Doctor Who.

David Tennant is giving up playing the time traveller to star in a romantic comedy with The Devil Wears Prada star Emily Blunt.

He will take the starring role in movie Cheerful Weather For The Wedding.

Filming of the romantic comedy is due to start next spring - after shooting for Doctor Who has finished.

His role confirms speculation that he won't be returning for a fourth series as the Doctor.

He is filming the second series and has reportedly agreed a deal to come back for a third with the Doctor's latest gorgeous assistant Martha played by Freema Agyeman.

Clockwork Pictures will start shooting the multi-million-pound movie in May - when Tennant's contract as the Doctor expires.

Producer Teun Hilte said yesterday: "The director worked with David before on short film Traffic Warden and people have responded very well to the script.

"It won't be done before he leaves Doctor Who and shooting will take place around the principals' other commitments. It will be a four-week shoot."

Cheerful Weather For The Wedding, written by Julia Strachey, was published in 1932.

It tells the story of a chilly country wedding in the middle of winter. Emily, 23, who plays the reluctant fiancAe, has enjoyed outstanding reviews as a caustic, put-upon assistant to Miranda, Meryl Streep's lead role in The Devil Wears Prada.

Yesterday, a spokeswoman for Tennant's agents ICM refused to comment on whether he will return to Doctor Who.

David told Doctor Who magazine last week that he wanted to leave the series on a high.

He said: "There's an element of being in a long-running show that's a gamble, because I am 35 now.

"It is judging the right moment to go. I think I now know how many series I'm going to do - but I think it would be stupid of me to say more than that."

The next series of Doctor Who hits the TV screens in March.
