TELXON WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY CHOSEN BY CANADIAN TIRE CORP.
NEW YORK, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Telxon Corporation (NASDAQ: TLXN), the world leader in portable wireless microcomputer technology, announced today that Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited (CTC) has selected the company as the vendor of choice for its network of more than 420 independent Canadian Tire Associate Stores across Canada. Telxon made the announcement at the National Retail Federation's annual convention and exposition in New York City, where retailers from around the world gather to discuss industry strategies and developments. After an intensive year-long review of several vendors as well as test installations at store sites, CTC chose Telxon's DATASPAN 2000(TM) wireless spread spectrum communications network, wireless 4683, POS-5000 and the PTC-960 hand-held computer, to perform a variety of retail technology applications, including shelf fill, inventory audit and inquiry, receiving and product location maintenance. "Our extensive evaluation clearly indicated the superiority of Telxon's wireless system, and we expect to see substantial benefits at those independent stores who choose to install the system," said Mark Foote, director of store systems, Canadian Tire. "Because the PTC system enables us to get product to the floor quicker, we can serve our customers better. Our staff productivity is improved, and clerical errors are all but eliminated. "All these factors quickly translate into bottom-line results," he said. "We estimate that the return on our technology investment will only take two to six months." CTC fully expects the majority of the independent retailers will implement the wireless system. Foote said several associate stores were extensively involved in the testing and selection of Telxon as the vendor of choice. "The true technology partnership established between Telxon and Canadian Tire has created a wireless system that not only is producing immediate results for CTC's business, but has built-in growth capabilities for the future," said D. Michael Grimes, president of Telxon's Retail Technology Group. "Canadian Tire's decision to implement a system based on performance and value enables them to have a long-term outlook to their technology needs." Based in Toronto, CTC was founded in 1922 as a small garage and auto parts depot and has grown to employ over 27,000 people in a number of divisions, including petroleum, auto parts, transportation and credit. The Canadian Tire Associate Stores are operated by independent Associate dealers that offer automotive products and services, household, hardware and leisure goods to customers all over Canada.
