TELXON INTRODUCES POSXPRESS FAMILY OF HAND-HELD COMPUTERS

TELXON INTRODUCES POSXPRESS FAMILY OF HAND-HELD COMPUTERS
AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Telxon Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS: TLXN) introduced today a unique family of wireless, portable point-of-sale (POS) computers that will function inside or outside the retail store and communicate seamlessly, in real time, with the POS controller.
The announcement came at Scan-Tech '91 in Dallas, the automatic identification industry's major trade show.
The new series of microcomputers, called POSXPRESS (TM), includes the clipboard-sized model POS-5000, a self-contained full-function POS terminal that incorporates advanced barcode scanning, mag stripe reading, touch screen technology for electronic signature capture, on-the-spot printing capability and wide-band radio frequency (RF) data communications.
"Our new POSXPRESS systems bring unparalleled flexibility to the check-out function in the retail environment," said Raymond D. Meyo, president and chief executive officer of the world's leading producer of hand-held microcomputer systems.
Primary usage will be alleviating congestion at backed-up check-out aisles during peak selling periods, he explained. "With POSXPRESS, the retailer can set up a wireless check-out station anywhere in the store. Because the terminals are battery-powered, no wires, cables or electrical outlets are required.
"The portability of POSXPRESS also enables the retailer to handle sales transactions at other outposts outside the store such as garden centers, kiosks and sidewalk sales because the terminals can communicate seamlessly with the POS controller inside the store," Meyo said. "The bottom line is that POSXPRESS will help retailers to improve service and customer satisfaction."
Flagship of the new product line is the model POS-5000, which also offers a choice of keyboards, barcode printing capability and an electronic journal that allows data to be stored and printed at another time.
When not functioning as a POS terminal, the Telxon unit can also be used for other critical applications such as receiving, price management and inventory control.
The Telxon model POS-960, another self-contained unit, combines barcode scanning, keyboard data entry, mag stripe reading and RF communications enabling store personnel to single-handedly capture and transmit data to the POS controller from anywhere in the retail environment.
Meyo said that the combination of portable mag stripe readers and RF data communications will enable store personnel to obtain credit card approvals from the authorization center from anywhere on the selling floor.
The software driving the POSXPRESS applications is a series of programs developed by AW Computer Systems, Inc. These programs are designed specifically to enable hand-held microcomputers to run seamlessly on an IBM 4680 controller. The system will also support older-vintage IBM or other brand POS terminals. Telxon has marketing rights to AW's new RF data communications connectivity systems in all segments of the retail industry.
Telxon Portable Tele-transaction Computers (PTCs) gather, process and store on-site, real-time data which is communicated to a host computer. These systems incorporate the company's proprietary operating and applications software, associated peripheral equipment and communications devices.
Telxon's executive and engineering offices are located in Akron, Ohio, and its manufacturing facility is in Houston. Telxon customers are served by more than 50 sales and service offices worldwide.
