AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- J. Robert Anderson, vice chairman, chief financial officer and a board member of Grumman Corporation, has been elected to the board of directors of Telxon Corporation (NASDAQ: TLXN). The announcement came today from Robert F. Meyerson, Telxon chairman and chief executive officer.
Anderson joined Grumman, an aircraft and aerospace company based in Bethpage, N.Y. in 1991. Prior to that, he had spent 20 years at Ford Motor Company, Dearborn, Mich. and eight years at Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc., Akron, Ohio, the last three as vice chairman, chief financial officer and chief administrative officer.
Telxon Corporation, headquartered in Akron, is a world leader in the design, manufacture, integration and marketing of portable and wireless tele-transaction computer systems and data communication networks.
"J. Robert Anderson's 30-year background in corporate finance and his experience in international business brings an added dimension to Telxon's board of directors as the company refocuses to face the many challenges of the future," Meyerson said.
A native of Boston, Anderson obtained an undergraduate degree at the University of South Carolina and a master of business administration degree at Stanford University.
From graduate school, Anderson joined Ford as a financial analyst where he became one of the youngest supervisors on the company's financial staff. Over two decades, he held several important positions, including controller of Ford's diversified products operations, assistant treasurer and financial operations planning director in the office of the president.
In 1978, Anderson was promoted to president of Ford Motor Land Development Corporation, a post he held until 1983, when he left Ford to become senior vice president, chief financial officer and a director of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.
Anderson was credited with devising and implementing financial strategies that contributed to the successful turnaround of Firestone. After the sale of Firestone to Bridgestone in 1988, he remained with the new company, Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. as vice chairman, chief financial officer and chief administrative officer until January, 1991.
