TELXON'S DATASPAN 2000 SPREAD SPECTRUM SYSTEM CHOSEN BY BURLINGTON

TELXON'S DATASPAN 2000 SPREAD SPECTRUM SYSTEM CHOSEN BY BURLINGTON
AKRON, Ohio, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Telxon Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS: TLXN), the world leader in hand-held microcomputer technology, has announced a new multimillion-dollar contract with the Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation (NYSE: BCF) to install Telxon wireless spread spectrum Portable Tele-transaction Computer (PTC) systems at 185 Burlington discount stores across the United States.
Telxon will equip Burlington's stores with the DATASPAN 2000(TM) spread spectrum wireless communications network, including the PTC-960 hand-held microcomputer.
One of the nation's leading discount retailers, Burlington will use Telxon wireless PTC systems for a host of retail automation activities such as receiving and price verification. PTC systems have also been used in Burlington's warehouses for more than four years.
With PTC systems, Burlington, headquartered in Burlington, N.J., will be able to deploy a whole new class of applications in its retail stores, which will provide the company with more accurate stock information, explained Michael Prince, Burlington's director of information services. "The system empowers users on the floor, enabling complete interaction with our host computer without requiring a hard-wired connection," he said.
"A system solution like this is absolutely invaluable to us as a company," he added. "With automation at the point-of-sale, distribution and now store levels, it closes the loop to give us the ability to operate our business with greater control."
"Telxon worked with Burlington to put together a spread spectrum solution that is both powerful and practical," said Raymond D. Meyo, Telxon president and chief executive officer. "Not only was the DATASPAN 2000 spread spectrum system able to give them both the convenience and the coverage they needed, but Telxon's knowledge of open system architecture enabled our systems to fit seamlessly into their existing network."
Telxon is the hand-held industry leader in wireless data communications sales, with more than 35 percent of the market.
Telxon PTCs, related operating and application software, and communication devices work together to link PTCs with personal and mainframe computers and form a continuous information system from the shop floor to the executive floor, from the back room to the board room.
Telxon's executive and engineering offices are located in Akron, Ohio, and its manufacturing facility is in Houston. More than 6,000 customers around the world are served by more than 50 sales and service offices.
