 TELMEX AWARDS AT&T A $28.9 MILLION CONTRACT
 FOR DIGITAL SWITCHING EQUIPMENT
MEXICO CITY, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Telefonos de Mexico (TELMEX), as part of its effort to meet Mexico's expanding communications needs, has signed a contract with AT&T Network Systems for $28.9 million worth of switching equipment, the companies announced today.
TELMEX is upgrading the country's network with leading-edge digital technology. The contract calls for installation of AT&T's 5ESS(R) Switch, the most advanced digital switching system available today, which has the capacity to handle up to 900,000 local calls per hour while offering users new advanced services. Starting later this year, TELMEX will be adding 5ESS Switches to its network through 1995.
"By adding AT&T digital switching equipment, we improve our network's quality, increase its capacity and respond to our society's growing need for advanced information services," said Juan Antonio Perez Simon, president of TELMEX.
In explaining its selection, TELMEX cited AT&T's leading-edge technology and its reputation for quality, as well as competitive pricing, fast delivery schedules and technological support.
Santiago Gutierrez, executive director of AT&T in Mexico, said, "This latest in a series of agreements again demonstrates our commitment to support TELMEX in its effort to build, in a relatively short period of time, a state-of-the-art telecommunications network."
The agreement announced today, the first time that TELMEX has awarded AT&T a switching contract, recognizes AT&T as a third supplier of digital switching for the network upgrade. Telnor, a TELMEX subsidiary, purchased 5ESS Switches last year for its Tijuana and Mexicali central offices.
As a telecommunications equipment supplier, AT&T's relation with TELMEX began in 1989 when TELMEX purchased DACS-II digital access cross- connect and multiplexing transmission equipment to establish a modern digital network for its major customers. In 1991, TELMEX purchased $130 million worth of fiber optic cable, transmission equipment and installation services for its 13,500 kilometer backbone communications network which will link 54 locations throughout the country.
The AT&T 5ESS Switch is in commercial service in 27 countries, with more than 44 million lines shipped. It serves as a digital platform for many switching applications, including local and toll, international gateway, operator services, ISDN and intelligent network.
AT&T provides communications services, equipment and computer systems to consumers, businesses and communications companies around the world.
