TELESP AWARDS FIRST CELLULAR SYSTEM FOR THE INTERIOR OF SAO PAULO STATE TO MOTOROLA NORTEL

 SCHAUMBURG, Ill., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- MOTOROLA NORTEL Communications received an award from the Sao Paulo State Telecommunications Company (TELESP) for the installation of a Motorola cellular system in the Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Ribeirao Preto and Araraquara regions of Brazil.
 Under terms of the agreement, which is valued at over US$18 million, MOTOROLA NORTEL, in association with the Brazilian company Equitel S.A., will supply three Motorola high capacity EMX(R) 2500 switches and more than 20 base stations. The Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) system is scheduled to be in service by September 1993. The population of the regions to be served exceeds 10 million.

 The TELESP contract represents the fifth award of MOTOROLA NORTEL products in the country to date. MOTOROLA NORTEL will now serve approximately 30 percent of the Brazilian marketplace, with cellular systems in Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Goias and Brasilia in addition to the system for the interior of Sao Paulo.
