TELESCAN REPORTS STRONG GROWTH IN SECOND QUARTER REVENUES AND EARNINGS

HOUSTON, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ --Telescan, Inc. reported today that its revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 1993 increased 82 percent to $1,692,967 from $932,925 for the same period in 1992, primarily due to its growing on-line financial database business and increased contract revenue. Second quarter 1993 net income was $25,667. It includes a loss of $13,420 related to Knowledge Express, L.C., a majority-owned subsidiary providing on-line database services to the technology transfer and research fields.
The company's 1993 second quarter gross margin of $932,746 increased approximately $377,304 from $555,442 for the corresponding 1992 period, principally reflecting higher services and product revenues, partially offset by increased communications and royalty expenses, as well as amortization expense related to product enhancement costs. Selling, general and administrative expense of $907,553 for the second quarter of 1993 increased $399,495 from $508,058 for the same period in 1992, principally due to an increase in the company's number of employees in the selling and administrative functions, and higher advertising and promotion expenses with approximately $110,000 of the expense increase related to Knowledge Express, L.C. The company continues to expand both its equipment capacity and employee base to handle the newly signed, recently announced contracts with BPI Communications and The Editor & Publisher Company.
For the six months ended June 30, 1993, revenues increased 71 percent to $3,187,689 from $1,868,767 for the same period in 1992, principally as the result of higher financial database revenues. Net income for the six months ended June 30, 1993 was $73,327, an increase of $19,272 compared to net income of $54,055 for the corresponding 1992 period. Included in net income for the first six months of 1993 is a loss of $56,929 related to the Knowledge Express subsidiary.
For the six months ended June 30, 1993, the gross margin of $1,712,669 reflects an increase of approximately $591,823 from $1,120,846 for the corresponding 1992 period, principally reflecting higher revenues partially offset by amortization associated with product enhancement costs and higher royalty expense. For the first six months of 1993, selling, general and administrative expenses of $1,595,615 increased $563,710 from $1,031,905 for the same period in 1992, principally due to an increase in the company's average number of employees in the selling and administrative functions, increased advertising and promotion, and facilities expenses.
