TELEPORT DENVER AND MILE HI CABLEVISION MOVE FORWARD ON DUAL
 DOWNTOWN TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS
DENVER, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Mile Hi Cablevision and Teleport Denver Ltd. (TDL) today broke ground on expanded dual downtown telecommunications networks through a "symbolic" fiber-optic splice by company officials, the mayor's office and Denver City Council members.
In ground-breaking ceremonies at Prudential Plaza, 1050 17th St., TDL President Joe Moreland said the new fiber-optic networks represent "a historic moment for the city of Denver because they expand choice for communications services.
"This expansion to TDL's network means an additional 10 million square feet of office space in downtown Denver will have an alternative to the local phone company in how they connect to their long-distance company. Our expanded, all-digital network, already serving an estimated 24 million square feet in Denver, will put us in front of about 75 percent of downtown businesses and can simultaneously carry voice, video and data."
Steve Kniffin, president of Mile Hi Cablevision said, "This project will bring cable television to the central business district for the first time. Mile Hi Cablevision's relationship with TDL adds obvious efficiencies and advantages for our central business district customers."
Greg Romberg, executive director of the Mayor's Office of Regulatory Reform, said, "Downtown's viability is Mayor Wellington Webb's priority. The construction of this telecommunications network is the technological breakthrough that will prepare the central business district for the 21st century."
The project was approved on March 9, by the Denver City Council, which voted to allow TDL to install a high-capacity telecommunications network. At the same time, TDL will construct a separate network that will bring Mile Hi Cablevision programming to the central business district.
Teleport Denver currently serves businesses throughout the Denver area with its fiber-optic network. It is the state's largest alternative local access provider. It recently completed a 115-mile fiber optic telecommunications network around metropolitan Denver, the Denver Tech Center, Greenwood Village and Inverness Business Park.
The all-digital network offers businesses a competitive choice to the local telephone company in connecting long-distance companies to long-distance companies, businesses to their long-distance company and businesses to businesses.
The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Intertel Communications Inc. (AMEX: ITR.EC), which is traded on the American Stock Exchange.
Mile Hi Cablevision serves 94,000 households within the City and County of Denver, Glendale and Lowry Air Force Base. With 61 channels, the cable company offers sports, news and information, movies, family and children's programming, music and specialty programming.
