TELEPANEL SYSTEMS ISSUES STATEMENT ON TRADING ACTIVITY IN STOCK
TORONTO, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- At the request of the Toronto Stock Exchange, Telepanel Systems, Inc. (TSE: TLS) today announced that it is unaware of any material reason for the significant trading in its shares at this time.
From Aug. 27 to Aug. 29, Telepanel displayed its products at the Supervalu Inc. 50th Anniversary convention in Minneapolis. Supervalu Inc. is the largest grocery distributor in the U.S.A.
"Interest in the Telepanel product was strong," said Penny Barber, marketing manager for Telepanel. "Over 3,000 grocery retailers attended the show and the acceptance of the product was positive," she continued.
In addition, "Telepanel received local network television coverage of its product at the convention, which could explain the considerable American investor interest in Telepanel shares," said Chris Skillen, president and CEO of Telepanel.
The legislation concerning electronic shelf pricing in Connecticut, as announced by Telepanel on April 14, 1992, has had an important impact on chain store interest in Telepanel Price and Information Network and the company is expecting positive results from its sale activities in that state.
"In our normal course of business, we are in discussions with key supermarket chains and potential remarketers of our products," said Skillen. "Appropriate announcements relating to these opportunities will be made when arrangements are concluded," he continued.
Telepanel, a Canadian company, has developed proprietary wireless electronic shelf labelling systems for use in retail stores. These systems have liquid crystal price display modules mounted on the shelf edge adjacent to the products in the store. Prices can be changed via a radio communications link to the stores' point of sale system, thereby providing accurate and up-to-date pricing. Telepanel has 12 systems installed in supermarkets in Canada, the United States and Europe.
Telepanel is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol "TLS".
