TELEMATICS INTERNATIONAL BECOMES THE FIRST U.S. WIDE AREA NETWORKING COMPANY TO ACHIEVE INTERNATIONAL ISO 9001 REGISTRATION

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Telematics International, Inc. (NASDAQ: TMAX) announced today it has achieved ISO 9001 certification for its three international operational facilities, becoming one of a small number of U.S.-owned companies -- and, according to available industry information, the only U.S. wide area networking company involved in the packet, frame relay and ATM marketplace -- to gain formal recognition of its commitment to quality through international ISO 9001 registration.
 Company-Wide Processes Covered
In achieving ISO 9001, Telematics has reached the most comprehensive level in the ISO quality registration system," said Andrew Pauker, Telematics' vice president corporate quality. "The inclusion of design, development and service in our scope of registration is what sets us apart from others who have achieved ISO 9002 registration, and what makes this such a significant accomplishment. This is a major milestone in Telematics' ongoing commitment to total quality management focusing on customer satisfaction and continuous process improvement."
The operational facilities certified are Telematics' plants in Calabasas, Calif. and Ft. Lauderdale, where its ACP, PCP and NFX product lines are designed, developed, manufactured and serviced; and Basingstoke, U.K., Telematics' European sales and service headquarters.
 Customers Offer Congratulations
Two major customers, AT&T and BT, congratulated Telematics on its ISO 9001 registration.
Eberhard Wunderlich, division manager data communications services, AT&T, said "As one of our strategic suppliers for services, such as our InterSpan(SM) Information Access Service, their achievement will help us provide higher quality products and services to meet our customers' requirements."
"We were pleased to hear of Telematics' success," said Steve Malde, BT Tymnet Europe operations manager. "We know how difficult it is to achieve ISO 9001 registration. As one of our major suppliers, this commitment to quality can only help BT deliver the high quality products and services that our customers demand."
 A U.S. Leader
According to CEEM Information Services in Fairfax, Va., publisher of ISO 9000 U.S. Registered Company Directory, just over 1,000 sites of U.S. companies have been certified to one or more of the ISO standards. This number represents far fewer individual companies, since firms such as DuPont have more than 40 registered sites.
Industry ISO consultants estimate that while 80 percent of the ISO registrations are for ISO 9002 and 9003, only 20 percent are for ISO 9001 certification which Telematics achieved. CEEM Information Services describes ISO 9001 as the most comprehensive standard in the series, covering all elements of ISO 9002 and 9003.
ISO 9001 registration validates a company's quality system, including processes such as product design/development, order receipt and processing, manufacturing, shipping, and customer service. The essential part of becoming and staying certified is a company's ability to comprehensively document its procedures, and adhere to and improve these procedures. Regular external audits by approved independent agencies ensure a high level of ongoing compliance.
 International Adoption
According to CEEM, although ISO certification is more prevalent in Europe where it was developed, U.S. government agencies are moving towards ISO standards. The Department of Defense plans to replace its MILQ-9858A standard with the new ISO 9000 series, and the Food and Drug Administration will incorporate ISO 9000 standards in its Good Manufacturing Practices regulations.
Telematics designs, manufactures and markets computer systems and software products for voice and data communication applications and networks. It provides a full range of frame relay products under the Network FrameXchange brand name, including frame relay switches, frame relay concentrators and frame relay access devices called FRADs. Telematics' NET25(R), SmartNet(R) and Digital Wideband Networks include a complete line of wide area networking products designed specifically for voice and data communications applications and networks. This includes a full range of programmable packet switching systems, frame relay systems, access communications processors and T1/E1 networking multiplexers. Telematics, headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., has approximately 360 employees worldwide with facilities in five U.S. locations, Basingstoke, England, Frankfurt, Germany and Paris.
