TELEKOM MALAYSIA BERHAD TO INVEST IN MTEL MESSAGING VENTURE

JACKSON, Miss., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) today announced that Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TMB), the Malaysian telephone company, is becoming a partner in Mtel International's Malaysian joint venture. The addition of TMB is expected to enhance the development of the nationwide and international wireless messaging system on the 931.9375 MHz frequency in Malaysia.
Under the terms of the agreement signed on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, TMB will assume a 40 percent share of equity in the joint venture. Of the remaining shares, Secter, Mtel's current partner, will hold 35 percent and Mtel will own 25 percent. The joint venture will retain the name, SkyTel Systems (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.
"We are excited to enter into a partnership with Telekom Malaysia Berhad, one of Asia's leading and most forward-thinking telecoms operators," said Alexander H. Good, president of Mtel International. "Today's agreement with TMB and Secter creates a strong messaging force in Malaysia which will assist in the rapid deployment of the network and development of the messaging subscriber base in Malaysia."
As previously announced, Mtel, in a joint venture with Secter Sdn. Bhd., was granted a license in February 1992 by the government of Malaysia to develop a nationwide and international messaging system on the 931.9375 MHz frequency. The Malaysian system will utilize Mtel's proprietary international messaging technology used throughout Mtel's growing international network. This technology is currently used by Singapore Telecom International to operate a 931.9375 MHz nationwide system in Singapore that is linked with the United States, Canada and Mexico. Within the next few months, the company expects it will link Hong Kong to this network, followed by Malaysia and Indonesia -- providing wireless communications to many of the busiest travel routes for business in Asia.
The Mtel network is a user-friendly platform employing a combination of computer, satellite and radio transmission technologies. By dialing into the Mtel system through a central 1-800 number, then entering a Personal Identification Number (PIN), users of the system can reach subscribers in participating countries with 931.9375 MHz wireless messaging systems.
Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp., headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is engaged in businesses which include nationwide paging and voice messaging services (provided through SkyTel Corp.) in the United States; nationwide paging services provided through joint venture companies in the United Kingdom and Mexico; other investments in international messaging through Mtel International; and an investment in American Mobile Satellite Corp. (AMSC). Mtel's common stock is quoted on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol MTEL.
