 TELEGLOBE CANADA COMMISSIONS INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS
LINK WITH SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA'S DIGITAL ANALYSIS SYSTEM
ATLANTA, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Teleglobe Canada is using Scientific-Atlanta's Digital Analysis System (AT9000 and DSMART software) to test and monitor the newest international telecommunications link, TAT-9.
TAT-9 is a new, high density communications system linking Europe with North America via 9,400 Km of fiber-optic cable laid under the Atlantic Ocean. The cable is owned by 35 telecommunications companies including Teleglobe Canada, AT&T, MCI and Sprint. TAT-9 can carry up to 80,000 simultaneous conversations, double the amount of TAT-8, the first fiber-optic undersea cable linking North America with Europe which went into service in 1988.
The northernmost entry point for TAT-9 is Pennant Point, Nova Scotia where high speed 140 Megabit DS3, E1 and DS1 signals are received and tested by Scientific-Atlanta's AT 9000 system. From there, the signals are routed to their ultimate destinations throughout North America. Teleglobe Canada has ordered four additional DS9000 systems with DSMART II software to further test and monitor its international transmission networks. The new order is valued at more than $400,000.
Theodore R. Wieber, president of Scientific-Atlanta's Electronic Systems Division, said, "We estimate that millions of dollars worth of digital message transmissions come over the fiber optic cables each minute, so keeping that transmission up to par is our primary goal."
The AT 9000 system installed at Teleglobe Canada's Pennant Point station, is used for in-service monitoring and on-demand testing of transmissions over the fiber-optic cable. The system, employing Scientific-Atlanta's DSMART control and management software, provides substation engineers immediate warning if the transmissions begin to degrade in quality.
Wieber added: "DSMART can be used to simultaneously look at a number of different circuits, test some, monitor others while the operator works from one computer screen. The multi-tasking functions of the Windows-based software allow a variety of tasks to be done at the same time."
Teleglobe Canada, a leader in the global telecommunications industry, provides telephone and other telecommunications services between Canada and more than 240 countries and territories.
Scientific-Atlanta's Electronic Systems Division is a leading global supplier of remote sensing ground stations, telemetry tracking systems, microwave measurement systems and wideband test, measurement and network enhancement products.
Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA) is a world leader in cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
