TELEFONICA DE ESPANA ANNOUNCES CO-OPERATION WITH UNISOURCE

MADRID, Spain, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Spanish operator Telefonica de Espana (NYSE: TEF) and Unisource -- a company jointly owned by PTT Telecom Netherlands, Swiss Telecom PTT and Swedish Tella -- have signed an agreement to start an intensive cooperation. Through this co-operation the parties in this agreement will jointly benefit from their complementary position in Europe and in the rest of the world.
This agreement will be the basis for further improvements of services to international customers. For example, by combining the premium data communications services of Telefonica with the comparable functions of Unisource, Telefonica customers will have an international extension and Unisource customers will have excellent customer support facilities in Spain.
The co-operation agreement will provide a platform for data communications and developments in other customer service areas like such as satellite services, corporate networks, mobile communications, etc. Activities to harmonize the customer offerings and customer support facilities will be carried out as well as co-development of the underlying network infrastructure and network management in order to promote seamless communications and one contact for corporate international networking.
The agreement marks a vital step in the internationalization of Telefonica and the positioning of Unisource as a leading pan-European telecommunications supplier. With Telefonica, Unisource dramatically expands its service capabilities in southern Europe, and by Spain being a major gateway to South America, the new co-operation will create a substantial growth in global reach.
For Telefonica the agreement also increases the possibilities to take an active part in the rapidly developing European telecom market. The combination of Telefonica and the Unisource shareholders place them at the very top among international telecom service providers.
Unisource, the first truly pan-European telecommunications operator with global reach and sales offices in all European markets, offers an extensive portfolio of telecommunications solutions to international companies encompassing data communications, message handling services, satellite communication and outsourcing services for corporate networks.
