TEKTRONIX ADDS MEDICAL SAFETY STANDARDS SUPPORT FOR PHASER IISD DYE SUBLIMINATION PRINTER; UL 544-CERTIFIED CONFIGURATION AVAILABLE

WILSONVILLE, Ore., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Tektronix (NYSE: TEK) today announced a configuration option for its Phaser(TM) IISD dye sublimation color printer that enables the printer to meet the UL 544 safety standard for use in medical, dental and hospital environments.
The Phaser IISD, introduced in July 1992, is the industry's lowest- priced color PostScript dye sublimation printer at $9,995.
Dye sublimation technology provides photographic-quality color printer output, but without the need for photo laboratory equipment or processing. The Phaser IISD also includes Tektronix proprietary Photofine technology, a suite of proprietary image rendering algorithms to accurately render fine lines and text and provide smooth color shades.
"Computer-based imaging has the potential to greatly enhance medical diagnostic detail and accuracy," said A.J. Rogers, Tektronix strategic marketing manager. "Dye sublimation technology provides on-demand color output well-suited to the color range and image clarity requirements of these systems."
Available immediately for $695 (U.S. suggested list price), the Option MD (medical/dental) includes a hospital-grade power cord, an isolation transformer and an interconnect power cord for coupling the printer to the isolation transformer.
The Phaser IISD Option MD adds the UL 544 configuration, allowing systems integrators and value-added resellers to include 8.5-by-11-inch dye sublimation printing capability in their systems targeted for clinical settings. With the power and sophisticated image processing capabilities of Adobe PostScript Level 2, the Phaser IISD is an ideal companion to computer-based medical imaging systems.
Designed for shareability in multiplatform workgroup environments, the Phaser IISD includes AppleTalk(R), parallel and serial ports with automatic switching among each of the interfaces. EtherTalk connectivity is available as a hardware option, and TCP/IP connectivity is provided via Tektronix' 4511A Ethernet network interface.
The Phaser IISD uses a 24MHz AMD 29000 RISC processor for fast image processing. Base memory configuration is 16MB, which supports full- image processing and printing capability because of advanced memory management and data compression techniques. Printer memory can be expanded to 64MB for faster throughput. Optional capabilities, such as downloadable fonts, can be supported with an external hard drive.
