TEENS WHO VOLUNTEER CAN WIN SCHOLARSHIPS; CALL FOR ENTRIES ISSUED FOR THE
    THIRD ANNUAL 'AMERICA'S TEEN-AGERS ARE CHIPPING IN' CONTEST
    WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Outstanding teens who volunteer time in their communities can win college scholarships in a contest announced today by The National Potato Board and the Snack Food Association.  The "America's Teen-agers Are Chipping In" contest will recognize and reward teens who chip in to better their communities through volunteer work in places such as hospitals, shelters and nursing homes all around the country.  According to the Independent Sector, there are over 13 million young men and women spending four or more hours a week doing just that.
    To uncover the good deeds of thousands of teens nationwide, The National Potato Board and the Snack Food Association (SFA) are issuing a call for entries.  Anyone who knows of one or more teens "chipping in" to help their community can give them the recognition they deserve by entering them in the "America's Teen-agers Are Chipping In" contest.  To request contest rules and entry information, call 800-472-8836, or write to the "America's Teen-agers Are Chipping In" contest, P.O. Box 5000, Clarksburg, Md. 20871.  The deadline for entries is Nov. 1, 1992.
    Entries are judge on the personal commitment the teenagers show as well as the value of the volunteer experience, both to the teen and to his or her community.  One female and one male grand-prize winner will receive a $5,000 U.S. Savings Bond.  The two runners-up will each receive a $2,000 bond, and 50 honorable mention winners will receive a backpack.  One grand-prize winner and one runner-up will be honored at SFA's national convention, SNAXPO '93, in Nashville.  The other set of winners will be honored at The National Potato Board's 1993 annual meeting in Denver.
    The National Potato Board and SFA are joint sponsors of National Snack Food Month.  The National Potato Board represents potato growers nationwide.  SFA is an international trade association of approximately 900 company members that represents snack manufacturers and suppliers to the snack industry.  Snacks produced and sold by SFA members include potato chips, corn chips, tortilla chips, pretzels, popcorn, pork rinds, snack nuts, extruded snacks, dried meat snacks, multigrain chips, bite-size crackers, cracker sandwiches, filled products, party mix, trail mix, bagel chips, fruit snacks, dips and dip mixes.
