TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ARE BEST SELLING TOY IN AMERICA,
 ACCORDING TO INDUSTRY SURVEY
JERICHO, N.Y., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles demonstrated awesome power as they once again took top honors as the best selling toy in America for 1991.
The Best Selling Toy Survey of Playthings Magazine, an industry publication, showed that the Heroes-In-A-Half-Shell even outperformed their own previous first place record, set in 1990.
"Kids across America have accepted the Turtles into their hearts and for that we are very thankful. The Turtles will continue to assist worthy organizations helping children," said Mark Freedman, president of Surge Licensing, Inc., the exclusive worldwide licensor of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
"We are proud that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle toys are fun, quality products offered at attractive prices," said Freedman. Surge's licensee for Turtle toys is Playmates Toys, Inc.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles captured first place in a national survey of 10,000 retail operations. The top ten are:
 1. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
 2. Barbie
 3. G.I. Joe
 4. Game Boy
 5. Super Soaker
 6. Robin Hood
 7. Super Grip Ball
 8. WWF Wrestling Figures
 9. Waterbabies
 10. Magna Doodle
Playthings Magazine said "the Turtle years" of 1988 through 1990 saw a resurgence in the toy industry's action figure category. "The likenesses of these radical reptiles can be seen on everything from breakfast cereal to talking toothbrushes to Nintendo cartridges. Basking in their success, the Turtles' animated series is on six days a week; their live-action movie was a box office smash, with millions of video cassettes sold; and major tie-ins with Pizza Hut, Burger King and Ralston-Purina keep the quirky quartet busy." The Turtles CBS network show is number one among kids as is the Group W syndicated TV show.
Freedman said the Turtles are also very active in non-profit, charitable activities. The Turtles are the national SpokesTurtles for pre-school immunization to help kids fight such diseases as mumps, measles and rubella. The Green Machine also works with a Partnership- For-A-Drug-Free-America and serve as SpokesTurtles for bicycle helmet safety programs and the national Buckle-Up Campaign. The Turtles are also helping the Department of the Interior with a video to teach kids about cultural sites.
Earlier this year, the annual Licensing Industry Manufacturers Association named Surge Licensing the 1991 Licensing Agency of the Year, beating out the Walt Disney Company, Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising and Major League Baseball Properties. Surge also took the License of the Year, for its work with "Turtles," as well as top honors for best national merchandising and international achievement. Surge said sales of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles related products exceed $1 billion through 130 licensees in America and more than 600 licensees worldwide.
