TED WILLIAMS' UNIQUE HALL OF FAME PLAQUE AND BLACK SOX TEAM SET TO BE FEATURED AT CHICAGO SPORTS CARD AUCTION

MONTVILLE, N.J., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- A major array of sports cards, Ted Williams' personally rejected Hall of Fame plaque and a set of 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" team cards will be offered on Saturday, July 24, at a special auction in Chicago.
The auction, to be managed by Greg Manning Auctions, Inc. of Montville will be in the Allerton Hotel, 701 North Michigan Ave., Chicago. It will include 351 lots of cards and card sets for baseball, basketball, boxing, football, golf and hockey. There will be 125 lots of Professional Sports Authenticator graded and encapsulated cards available.
It is not generally known that the bronze plaque originally designed for the occasion of Ted Williams' 1966 induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame was rejected by the great hitter because he was displeased with his likeness. This plaque, the only memorial of its kind believed to be available outside the Hall of Fame, recently became available, and will be placed on view at the July 24 auction.
The 1919 Chicago "Black Sox" team set to be offered was printed prior to the team's infamous World Series appearance, and is accompanied by its original box. The set is believed to be unique and the popular "Shoeless Joe" Jackson card in the set is therefore far more rare than the Honus Wagner card (60-70 known), which has sold for as much as $451,000 at auction.
Greg Manning Auctions, Inc. is one of the world's largest stamp auction houses. It also conducts auctions of other collectibles, including sports trading cards and sports memorabilia, bringing together buyers and sellers located throughout the world. The company completed its initial public stock offering in May 1993.
The auction firm set a new record on June 26, 1993, for the largest dollar-volume stamp auction ever held in New Jersey.
